Nakashima was instrumental in designing a lot of the furniture for the design school I studied in NID*. All of us who studied there have had the good fortune to sit on his chairs while working or watching films in the auditorium. I love his simplicity in design. But the most emotive and effective experience of Nakashimaâs style can be had at the ashram in Pondicherry. Itâs got very strict rules though so you need to be thoroughly prepared to take up a short residence there. Itâs meditative.

One of my favourite teachers from NID passed away last morning. He was instrumental in bringing Design to India and every qualified furniture designer in the country today has studied under him. In fact, till the 90s every industrial design (product, furniture, ceramics) student has had him as their guide and faculty at some point or the other. The most generous, humble and loving teacher on campus. A true father figure to so many of us there. I thought since you like architecture and furniture, Iâd share this studentâs tribute to him. He worked with George Nakashima.
