I am a victim of the auto-translation feature.

I don’t know how much my pride as a writer (in Japanese) has been hurt by the automatic translation functions of Facebook and Instagram.

Yesterday, my husband asked me, “Miho, what does this mean?” He showed me his iPhone. I was speechless.

The Japanese title was🙂…… through the stories of people close to me, I think about the relationship between Japan and India.

However, the auto-translation said😱…… think about the relationship with nipples through the stories of those close to us.

How did Japan and India become nipples?

In Japanese, names of countries are sometimes shortened using kanji characters. For example, Nihon (Japan) is “Nichi”, India is “In”, and so on.

We sometimes put them together and write Nichi-In. Newspapers and other media often use short names in order to reduce the amount of text.

The auto-translation function did not understand the kanji “Nichi-In” and translated it as Chikubi (Nipple).
I have used the term “Nichi-In” many times in the past. Each time, has it been converted to “nipple”? Help me!!

There have been many similar cases in the past.

このことについては、先日も記したが、今回もまた、盛大な誤訳をやらかしてくれた。自分のiPhoneで、わたしのFacebook投稿を見た夫から、「ミホ、これどういうこと？」と言われた。絶句。

日本語のタイトルは、こうだった。

🙂……身近な人の話を通して、日印の関わりを思う。

ところが、自動翻訳では、

😱……身近な人の話から、乳首との関わりを考える。

乳首？！

ねえ。どうして日印が乳首になるの？

FacebookもInstagram、どちらも日印が乳首になっている。今、「日本とインド」と書き直したが、これまでいったい、何度「日印」と記してきたか。

その度に、「乳首」と変換されてきたのか。だとしたら、わたしはどれだけ、乳首関係に熱心なのか。

ああもういや。こういう例はたくさんある。本当に、無能力な自動翻訳機能をやめてほしい。せめてDeeplを備えてもらえないものか。

「日印」というワードを使う頻度の高い各位、お互い気をつけましょう。
