I’m Praveen, and I’m a visually impaired person. I am blind by birth. I completed my schooling in an organisation called the Jyoti Seva School for the blind. The school is run by the Franciscan sisters, Servants of the Cross from Poland. I was fortunate to study in Jyoti Seva because I was given, not only a good education, but I was taught daily living skills necessary for a visually impaired person to lead a successful and an independent life.
At present, I work for State Bank of India as deputy manager, and I live in Fraser town, Bangalore with my wife. My wife has done her masters in English literature, and she works for Wipro. She also is a visually impaired person, like me. I’m also an amateur pianist, and a singer as well. I received my basic piano training at my school, and I also was fortunate to learn under two of the finest piano teachers.
For a couple of years, I was trained by a Japanese teacher, Asami. What amazed me was how easily she adapted to teaching the blind without any prior experience. It really was a great pleasure learning from her. At present, I’m learning from yet another wonderful teacher, Ms. Juanita Jayant. She tutored me in both music theory and grade 8 exam of the Associate Board of Royal School of Music. She teaches me both by ear, and in braille. I use my computer and mobile phone with the help of a screen reader. I also read with the help of braille. Braille is a script used by the blind, and we read by feeling the raised dots.
I have a great passion for literature and classical music. It is my great pleasure to sing along with Miho, and I am really happy to sing a little Japanese in the song Teo Toriyatte, originally sung by the British rock band Queen. Looking forward to collaborating further with Miho, and yes, to singing a lot more in Japanese!
